Pacquiao: The Lord is the strength in me

MANILA - Filipino pride Manny Pacquiao vowed to do everything he can to win the mega bout against American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

"Gawin natin lahat ng makakaya natin bukas," he said in an interview on radio dzMM.

Pacquiao was all smiles and exuded calmness during the weigh-in at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. He even gamely took a selfie before walking to the stage.

He said he was overwhelmed to see all the people who turned out for the weigh-in event. Fight fans shelled out $10 while others paid more for the tickets to see both fighters at the weigh-in.

"Nagpapasalamat ako sa suporta ng fans sa buong mundo lalo na sa turnout ng weigh-in kanina. Akala ko mas maraming fans si Mayweather, but ang result marami tayo. Na-surprise ako," he said.

The Pacman tipped the scales at 145 pounds while Mayweather weighed in at 146 pounds.

'THANK YOU'

The humble Filipino boxer even thanked Mayweather during the staredown.

When asked why, Pacquiao said he thanked Mayweather for making the fight happen because their fans deserve it.

"It's a great responsibility for me to give enjoyment to the fans. The fans deserve it. Tomorrow, the fans deserve to have a good fight. Whether you're a fan of Mayweather or you're a fan of Manny Pacquiao, you deserve to have a good fight tomorrow," he said.

In the radio interview, Pacquiao underscored the importance of having faith and how this guides him in life.

"Napaka-importante sa buhay natin na may Panginoon, especially in times of ganito, tinutulungan tayo, iniingatan tayo at binibigyan tayo ng lakas at tagumpay. Lahat ng tagumpay ko Siya nagbigay," he said.

He added, "Lahat ng credit na yan hindi sa akin, kung di sa Panginoon."

Winning the fight is not his only goal. He believes that his other most important mission is to spread the faith.

"Ngayon ko naintindihan na si Manny Pacquiao, from nothing na natutulog sa kalye, sapin ng karton, tapos hindi mo ma-imagine na makilala sa buong mundo, and then the Lord raised me up in this position. Ini-angat Niya ako ng ganito to glorify His name, na ma-proklama ko name Niya sa buong mundo," he said.
He wasted no time in spreading faith by showing to the thousands of people gathered at the MGM Grand Garden Area the message printed in red at the back of his t-shirt: "All Glory and Honor Belongs to God."

"It's not our battle, it's the Lord's and He is the one giving us strength and blessing and keeping us safe," Pacquiao said. -- With a report from Agence France-Presse
