MANILA - Well before and after it aired, the pilot episode of "Pangako Sa 'Yo" on Monday topped nationwide and worldwide trends on Twitter as viewers expressed excitement and poured praise for ABS-CBN's modern retelling of the pioneering teleserye.
The highly anticipated premiere was narrated by Amor Powers (Jodi Sta. Maria) -- a vengeful business tycoon in the original -- as she recalls her humble past in San Felipe.
The daughter of a Buena Mines worker, Amor finished elementary and high school as a scholar of the company and made her passion for cooking a business to support her nursing studies.
Then known as Amor de Jesus, the barrio lass has long been in love with Eduardo (Ian Veneracion), a scion of the influential Buenavistas who own the mining company her father (Boboy Garovillo) works for.
They have their first interaction when they get trapped in an elevator, where she nearly admits her feelings for him.
Eduardo, however, is betrothed to Claudia (Angelica Panganiban), the illegitimate and only child of Gov. Enrique Zalameda (Leo Rialp). This, in order to further the Buenavistas' political aspirations.
Hours before "Pangako Sa 'Yo" debuted, the pilot episode's official hashtag was already the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter locally and worldwide, thanks in part to lead stars Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla's legions of fans online.
While the young superstars were yet to be seen in the premiere telecast -- they portray the children of Amor and Claudia, respectively -- their fans found much to feel "kilig" about in their stead.
In particular, the elevator scene of Amor and Eduardo delighted fans and casual viewers alike, based on tweets using the official hashtag that easily numbered past 500,000. Some praised Sta. Maria's acting, while other swooned over Veneracion's matinee idol looks.
Airing weeknights after "Nathaniel," "Pangako Sa 'Yo" is under the direction of Olivia Lamasan, Rory B. Quintos and Dado Lumibao. It is the latest production of Star Creatives, the same team behind "The Legal Wife" and the just-concluded "Forevermore."
