With so many young artists seeking to make a name for themselves these days, one has to find something that would make her stand out from the pack. For Morissette, it’s her whistling.
The “Voice of the Philippines” Season 1 semi-finalist recalled that it was Soul Siren Nina who inspired her to hone her whistling technique.
“’Yung very first artist ko pong napanood live eh si Nina,” she related during her album press conference last April 22. “’Yun din yung time na nasa peak pa rin si Nina ng career niya, tapos sumikat po ‘yung ‘Foolish Heart’ niya. So parang naisip din po namin ng family ko na i-try din ‘yung whistle. Napa-practice-practice ko po ‘yun dati pero hindi ko po masyadong nagagamit kasi hindi po sa lahat ng song nagagamit ‘yung technique na ‘yon.”
However, it was not until after “The Voice” concluded that she remembered that she had the skill for it.
“Medyo nakalimutan ko po ‘yun, then after ‘The Voice,’ naisip po na there has to be something na gagawin ko para mapansin ako,” said the young singer.
Through persistent practice, Morissette has grown comfortable in using her whistle tone, as evidenced in her hits like “Akin Ka Na Lang” from Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs 2014.
With a voice as powerful and as effortless like that, Morissette backs it up with a ritual that helps preserve her voice. She doesn’t drink cold beverages and eat sweets. She also makes it a point to be well-rested.
“Dumaan po sa stage na nagka-nodules po ako,” she revealed. “’Yung nodules ay ‘yung ‘pag ‘yung vocal cords mo, na-abuse mo. Nangyari po ‘yun sa ‘Camp Rock’ (her local theater debut) na parang masyado akong nagtiwala sa sarili ko na kanta-kanta lang… ‘Yun pala pagod na pagod na ‘yung boses ko. Kaya throughout the run paos na ako.”
Produced by Francis Kiko Salazar (who also wrote “Akin Ka Na Lang”), Morissette’s debut album consists of seven tracks, namely “Throwback” with KZ Tandingan, “Hinahanap Pa Rin,” ”Mahal Kita, Mahal Mo Sya, Mahal N’ya Ay Iba,” “You and I,” “Run Like A Warrior,” the acoustic version of ”Akin Ka Na Lang,” and her carrier single “Di Mapaliwanag.”
It also includes bonus tracks: the original version of “Akin Ka Na Lang” and the teleserye and movie theme songs “Ano’ng Nangyari Sa Ating Dalawa” (from “Two Wives”), “Kapag Ako Ay Nagmahal” (from “Flordeliza”), and “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” (with Daniel Padilla, from the box office movie “Crazy Beautiful You”).
Morissette’s debut album under Star Music is now available in all record bars nationwide for P199. Digital tracks can also be downloaded via online music stores such as iTunes and
