ABS-CBN’s “All-Star Sunday Afternoon Party” or “ASAP” celebrated its 20th anniversary not just as the longest-running, multi-awarded and top-rating Sunday musical variety show on Philippine television, but also as the one who gave birth to several successful female groups in showbiz.
All-out performances by all-star Kapamilya artists were launched, popularized, and revived in “ASAP” segments such as “ASAP” It Girls, Clash Dance, YRS and the like. These even gave tribute to earlier girl-powered segments like Dayanara Torres’ Sayawnara and Rica Peralejo’s Rated R.
As “ASAP” marked its 20th anniversary yesterday, Feb. 22, with a grand special episode aired live from the SM Mall of Asia Arena, let’s recall these female groups that rocked our Sunday TV.
Featuring the Avenging Angela Velez and the Ravishing Regine Tolentino, Clash Dance is a dance segment on “ASAP” known for hot and feisty dance performances and showdowns, which also molded other dance artists like the Alluring April Tolentino, Marvelous Jem, Mesmerizing Michelle Bayle, Lovely Lana Asanin, Angelica X (Angelica Jones), and Dynamite Jenny Miller.
It may be recalled that in a controversial and intense dance off of Angela and Regine in 2002, “ASAP” reached the height of its smash hit segment. The dancing duo also reunited with Vina Morales on “ASAP Rocks” in 2013.
Just like what their group’s name suggests, MaSh is a combination of “ASAP” Supahdance’s girl members Maja Salvador and Shaina Magdayao. Together, they did powerful routines in the music of Britney Spears, Pussycat Dolls, Michael Jackson, Shakira, Ricky Martin, and more.
Champions of different singing competitions, “Pinoy Dream Academy Season 1’s” Yeng Constantino-Asuncion, “Search for a Star’s” Rachelle Ann Go, and “Star for a Night’s” Sarah Geronimo composed the powerful group YRS. They performed hit songs and ballads that never failed to amaze the “ASAP” audience and home viewers alike.
Short for “ASAP” Homegrown Divas,ASAP HD is a singing showdown by contest alumni. It consists of Morissette Amon (“The Voice of the Philippines” semi-finalist), Klarisse De Guzman (“The Voice of the Philippines” runner-up), and Angeline Quinto (“Star Power: Sharon's Search For The Next Female Pop Superstar” champion).
Composed of singers Nikki Gil, Karylle, and Toni Gonzaga, ASAP D-Lite is a segment in which they sang popular songs together. It may be remembered that in May 2010, they shared the “ASAP” stage with the “ASAP” It Girls in a K-pop-inspired performance.
Not just popular for being such great actresses, “ASAP’s” It Girls are the whole package. They sing, dance and perform like the true stars that they are. Plus, they’re all attractive and ooze sexuality in their own ways. Originally, they were composed of Kapamilya stars Maja Salvador, Bea Alonzo, Iya Villania, Shaina Magdayao, Anne Curtis, Toni Gonzaga, and Nikki Gil.
Launched last year, the new generation of It Girls and newest girl group on TV include the up-and-coming teen stars of the Kapamilya network. When they’re not with their respective leading men, the equally fashionable and talented Liza Soberano, Janella Salvador, Julia Barretto, and Kathryn Bernardo get together on the “ASAP” stage for sizzling performances featuring today’s music hits.
Directed by Johnny Manahan, “ASAP” airs every Sunday on ABS-CBN and in 20 different countries and territories through The Filipino Channel.
