Lea Salonga along with fellow stars from the original “Miss Saigon” cast surprised audience to a memorable musical performance.
On September 22, the “Miss Saigon” audience at the Prince Edward Theater in London was taken back in time by an unexpected return of the original cast for the production’s 25th anniversary. According to a report by The Telegraph, the regular show had just ended and the play’s attendees were already having champagne when Lea, in an all-black ensemble, appeared on stage to commence the surprise post-show act. The grandiose finale included performances by other members of the 1989 cast such as Simon Bowman who performed “The Last Night of the World” with Lea as well as Jonathan Pryce and Jon Jon Briones with “The American Dream." Fellow Filipina singer Rachelle Ann Go, who plays Gigi in the show’s current production, reportedly also joined Lea on stage for “The Movie in My Mind." According to interviews after the show and the widespread raves on social media, the original cast’s comeback was received even better than anticipated.
“We kind of expected it would be a very warm ovation,” Lea said. “But we didn’t expect it to be deafening. It was very special.” The gala performance is set to broadcast on BBC Radio 2 come October 3rd. See other latest news here.
