Forming the heart of the classic youth-oriented show “Gimik” were the characters played by Judy Ann Santos, Giselle Toengi, Jolina Magdangal, and Mylene Dizon.
Although they had their share of trials and triumphs, their growth on the show became an example to viewers especially the female fans.
Post-“Gimik,” these actresses were able to carve lucrative careers that in themselves can be an inspiration to many.
Judy Ann Santos as Dianne Villaruel
Who wouldn’t get carried away by her effortless bawlin on soap operas like “Mara Clara” and “Esperanza”? Nevertheless, she got a little break from all the heavy drama on “Gimik,” where she was paired with Rico Yan. She also became her own superhero in the fantaserye “Krystala.” Several series later, Judy Ann earned the title “Queen of Teleserye.”
Yet Judy Ann also has an expansive film career, having been cast in over 60 movies and earning recognitions for her portrayals. Her indie, “Ploning,” was the Philippines’ entry to the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film. In recent years, we saw Judy Ann also blossom as a host in “Bet on Your Baby,” “Master Chef Pinoy Edition,” and soon, on “I Do.”
Giselle Toengi as Gina de Leon
After “Gimik,” G had local acting gigs both in ABS-CBN and another network, plus a stint as MTV VJ. Eventually she looked for greener pastures in the US where she completed her education and built a family. It’s in the US where she also got to hone her theater acting skills, having landed roles in productions like “Saved by the Bell: The Musical” and “Days When Cocaine Was King.”
She would still heed the call of her previous hometown, flying back and forth in the Philippines every now and then to do TV shows and films. It was only natural for her to return: In 2012, she moved back here with her family, the same year she returned to the Kapamilya network to play the villainess Stella in “Aryana.”
Jolina Magdangal as SC Aragon
Jolina was many things during her peak: a fashion icon, a role model, and a rom-com royalty. Her team up with Marvin Agustin on “Gimik” spawned films that cemented them as the Maricel Soriano and William Martinez of their generation (“Kung Ayaw Mo, Huwag Mo,” “Labs Kita… Okey Ka Lang?,” and “Hey Babe”).
Until now, her character Bujoy gets meme-fied in social media, thanks to her heart-piercing line, “I’m so stupid of making the biggest mistake of falling in love with my best friend.”
Mylene Dizon as Melanie Suntay
Mylene’s character Melanie on “Gimik” was such a goody two-shoes that it would be hard to believe the same actress would be a certified villainess. She brought wrath to Claudine Barretto’s character in “Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan” back in 2001. She also turned in memorable performances as antagonist in more recent shows like “Mirabella,” “Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala,” “Budoy,” and “Juan dela Cruz.”
Her versatility and intensity as an actress was recognized through her Cinemalaya film “100” for which she received acting awards from the Film Academy of the Philippines, the Golden Screen Awards, and Star Awards for Movies.
Reminisce about your favorite “Gimik” actress through their previous Star Cinema films. Judy Ann, Giselle, Jolina, and Mylene all appeared in “Gimik: The Reunion” with Rico Yan, Marvin Agustin, Diether Ocampo, and Bojo Molina, among others.

Jolina appeared in the films "Ang TV: The Adarna Adventure",” “Flames The Movie” “Kung Ayaw Mo, Huwag Mo,” “Labs Kita… Okey Ka Lang?,” “Hey Babe,” “Tunay na Tunay, Gets Mo? Gets Ko!,” and “Kung Ikaw'y Isang Panaginip.”
Giselle was cast in the films “Langit sa Piling Mo” and “Wala Ka Nang Puwang sa Mundo,” while Mylene Dizon was part of “Magandang Hatinggabi” and “Bakit Hindi Ka Crush ng Crush Mo?”
