Climbing the success ladder was not an easy feat for Toni Gonzaga, as revealed in the latest issue of Metro Magazine of which she’s one of the cover girls. It took 15 years for Toni to solidify her stature as one of this generation’s most powerful celebrities.
“People think na you’re blessed, you’re getting one thing after another, they don’t know na everything is still a slow burn for me. Hindi siya ganun kabilis, lahat ng nangyayari sa akin,” she tells Metro in the cover story.
When she was starting out, she recalls that “mestizas would get more favors, they would get noticed more."
She would soon realize what makes her a cut above the rest thanks to her father Carlito’s advice. She invested in talent and hard work.
“You really have to prove yourself, that you’re worth something, that you’re worth their time. So I had to exert more effort para mapansin ako at 'yung personality ko mag-shine,” she says.
As fate would have it, Toni landed in that iconic soft drink commercial opposite Ultimate Heartthrob Piolo Pascual. She used to scream “I love you Piolo,” but eventually, people started chanting, “We love you Toni!” too. She became everywhere with several hit songs, box office films, hotshot endorsement deals, and a continuous stream of hosting gigs under her belt.
Toni acknowledges that with great success comes great responsibility.
“Being given this kind of influence is not actually to boost our ego and make us big-headed; it’s to be an inspiration to those who don’t have influence, to speak for those who don’t have influence,” she relates.
