#THENANDNOW: The guys of ‘Gimik’

“Gimik” may well be one of the most successful youth-oriented shows of all time.
Launched in 1996, it became a Saturday afternoon TV habit for fans because of characters they could root for and situations they could relate to – not to mention the love teams they could get “kilig” over. And of course, for the girls, who didn’t have a crush on at least one of the guys on the show?
Rico Yan as Rico Salveron
Seven years would not have been enough to showcase everything he can offer but Rico made the most out of it nonetheless. He did them all – drama (“Esperanza” and “Mara Clara” with his “Gimik” love interest Judy Ann Santos), romance (“Dahil Mahal na Mahal Kita” and “Got 2 Believe” with Claudine Barretto), and comedy (“Whattamen” with Marvin Agustin and Dominic Ochoa).
Outside showbiz, he was a youth advocate and an entrepreneur - overall, a certified matinee idol. As many had said, he was the star gone too soon. He died in his sleep in March 29, 2002 due to acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis.

Diether Ocampo as Gary Ballesteros
On “Gimik,” Diether had a formidable pairing with Giselle Toengi. When the show ended in 1999, however, Diether and G did projects separately. The actor was assigned in dramas with Claudine Barretto such as “Mula Sa Puso,” “Saan Ka Man Naroroon,” and “Marina.” He also worked with Kristine Hermosa on “Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas.” In spite of the entry of newcomers in the business, Diether managed to stay afloat through the soap operas “Sabel,” “Guns and Roses,” “Rubi,” and “Apoy sa Dagat,” his most recent outing.
Diether has been known likewise for his philanthropic works. He has put up his own organization, the K.I.D.S. (Kabataan Inyong Dapat Suportahan) Foundation and has also shown support for climate change prevention efforts.
Aside from being part of The Hunks, Diether also had his own band called Blow.

Marvin Agustin as Joey Fajardo
His pairing with Jolina Magdangal was one of the strongest team ups then in and out of the “Gimik” world. They were both goofy but they can also pierce hearts when needed. Together they starred in one of the most classic romantic movies of Star Cinema, “Labs Kita… Okey Ka Lang?”
En solo, Marvin showcased his dramatic prowess in teleseryes like “Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako,” “Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas,” and “Esperanza,” as well as films like “Dekada ’70” and “Tanging Yaman.”
As years went by, Marvin became less active in showbiz and became busy with his businesses – from restaurants to a concert promotion company. He’s one of the living proofs that there is life beyond being a famous celebrity.

Diego Castro as Jigs Mercado
Born to media veterans June Keithley and Angelo Castro, Jr., Diego carved a name for himself when he became part of Star Circle Batch 2 and cast on “Gimik.” He did a few shows on ABS-CBN before he moved to another network.
Diego eventually pursued another passion, cooking, and studied Culinary Arts. And just last year, he opened a restaurant with his wife.
Bojo Molina as Brian Ledesma
Bojo got his biggest break when he got paired with Mylene Dizon on “Gimik.” He did a few films like “Ipaglaban Mo II: The Movie” and “Pangako… Ikaw Lang” (starring Aga Muhlach and Regine Velasquez) before he distanced himself a bit from the spotlight and built his own family. He’s made a career in Guam as marketing director of a movie house.
He was last seen on TV via “Gimik 2010” where he, along with Judy Ann, Diether, Giselle, and Mylene reunited and played grown-ups to a new breed of matinee idols.
