‘Little Superstar’ Lyca wins ‘The Voice Kids’

Nine-year-old Lyca Gairanod emerged as the grand champion of the first-ever “The Voice Kids” during the finale episode aired yesterday, July 27, live at the Resorts World Manila.

The Caviteña native received the highest number of votes from the public. Fellow Team Sarah contender Darren Espanto came second, while Camp Kawayan’s Juan Karlos Labajo and Team Lea’s Darlene Vibares ranked third and fourth, respectively.

Lyca, who used to help her mother scavenge junk for selling, received a one-year recording contract with MCA Music, house and lot (tax-free), home appliance showcase, musical instrument showcase, one million pesos cash, and one million pesos worth of trust fund.

The Top 4 finalists went through an intense three-part battle, with the last round (performing with a celebrity guest) taking place last night.

Darren wowed the crowd with his duet with idol and Concert King Martin Nievera of “You are My Song.” Darren even played the piano at the beginning of the performance.

Darlene came next, performing “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” with Asia’s Nightingale Lani Misalucha. Her coach Lea Salonga dubbed it as her artist’s “best performance on stage.”

Meanwhile, Juan Karlos did a fun number of “Eto Na Naman” with Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano. After their performance, Gary commented about JK, “what a talent!”

The audience went wild when Lyca came out on stage with Aegis for the final performance: one of the group’s classic karaoke hits, “Basang-basa sa Ulan.” It was as if Lyca’s journey on “The Voice Kids” came full circle in that moment, since her Blind Auditions piece was also an Aegis song ("Halik").

Coaches Lea and Bamboo gave her a standing ovation, while Sarah Geronimo stood while delivering her feedback on the performance.
“Hindi lang pang-grand finals ang performance mo, parang concert mo!” she told Lyca.
