The semi-finals of “The Voice Kids,” held Saturday night at the Resorts World Manila, felt like a grand finals showdown among the Top 6 contenders.
They opened the show with a mash-up of Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Good Time” and Imagine Dragon’s “It’s Time.”
Ton-Ton Cabiles began the semi-final round with a sweet rendition of Michael Jackson’s “One Day in Your Life.” His coach Lea Salonga praised him for being a “very improved performer” and for standing out among the bunch with his “angelic” and “clean” singing.
Next was Camp Kawayan’s Edray Teodoro, who gave her own take in the Christina Aguilera power ballad “Beautiful,” trading the belting of high notes with her soulful singing. “You are original,” coach Sarah Geronimo told her.
Darren Espanto brought the house down with his performance of Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time.” A standing ovation from his coach Sarah and the audience were in order after he sang. “You are a winner!” the Pop Star royalty said.
Juan Karlos Labajo charmed the audience as he performed “Sway,” complete with his signature antics and swagger. “You are a natural,” said his coach Bamboo.
Coach Lea said if Nora Aunor was watching, she would have been proud of Lyca “Superstar” Gairanod. She performed a classic contest piece, “Pangarap na Bituin.” Although she’s still a diminutive diva, her coach Sarah said Lyka serves as a big inspiration to many.
Finally, Darlene Vibares turned emotional towards the end of her performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” She told host Luis Manzano that she misses her grandfather who passed away. Nevertheless, Darlene still has something to smile about with a standing ovation from her coach Lea. “Grabe ka! You’ve made me so, so proud. Ang galling mong bata ka,” the Broadway diva said.
