Friends Forever: 5 memorable 'barkada' films

By Lista Macuja
“Barkada” films represent the generation they belong to, making it very hard to rank the films included in this list.
Every couple of years, a memorable “barkada” is being released. These movie projects mirror the youth’s aspirations, dreams, and psyche.
These projects also give the public a glimpse as to who, among the current young stars, are already ripe for superstardom.

  • 1.      “Pare Ko” (1995)
    • a.       Director: Jose Javier Reyes
      b.      Cast: Mark Anthony Fernandez, Jomari Yllana, Claudine Barretto, Nica Valencia, Jao Mapa, Gio Alvarez, and Victor Neri
The movie “Pare Ko,” inspired by Eraserheads’ earlier hit, was topbilled by that generations most promising stars. The movie perfectly captured the essence of the song – the youth’s psyche, angst, and hopes.

    2.      “Gimik: The Reunion” (1999)
    • a.       Director: Laurenti Dyogi
      b.      Cast: Jolina Magdangal, Marvin Agustin, Rico Yan, Judy Ann Santos, Giselle Toengi, Diether Ocampo, Mylene Dizon, and Bojo Molina
“Gimik” started as an ABS-CBN TV show starring some of that generation’s promising stars. As the soon as the show aired, the stars went on to become the country’s hottest stars. Their respective schedules have been impossible to match because of their solo projects that the show had to bow out of the small screen.
Years after the conclusion of the show, when all the actors and actresses have established themselves as young superstars, they all reunited for this landmark movie.
      Imagine, Judy Ann-Rico, Jolina-Marvin, Diether-G, Mylene-Bojo in one movie!

    3.      “Trip” (2001)
    • a.       Director: Gilbert Perez
      b.      Cast: Marvin Agustin, Onemig Bondoc, Paolo Contis, John Prats, Jericho Rosales, Julia Clarete, Kristine Hermosa, Desiree Del Valle and Heart Evangelista
Short for “road trip,” the movie discussed what goes through a normal “barkada trip.” The surprising touch in this movie was the choice of actors. The actors, though not known to be real “barkadas” during that time, had undeniable chemistry in the project.
The movie also made the theme song “Trip Mo Ba?” a big hit.

    • 4.      “Jologs” (2002)
      • a.       Director: Gilbert Perez
        b.      Cast: Diether Ocampo, Patrick Garcia, Vhong Navarro, Assunta de Rossi, John Prats, Jodi Sta. Maria, Baron Geisler, Dominic Ochoa, Onemig Bondoc, Julia Clarete, and Michelle Bayle
Unlike some “barkada” movies included in the list, “Jologs” tackled more mature theme. The movie became a sort-of reunion for the stars of “Tabing Ilog” – Patrick Garcia, Baron Geisler, Jodi Sta. Maria. They were joined by ABS-CBN’s most promising stars during that time.
The choice for “Next In Line” to be the movie’s theme perfectly set the tone for the project.

      5.      “Reunion” (2012)
      • a.       Director: Frasco Mortiz
        b.      Cast: Enchong Dee, Xian Lim, Enrique Gil, Kean Cipriano, Jessy Mendiola, Megan Young, Julia Montes, Bangs Garcia, and Cristine Reyes
Having Eraserheads’ songs playing on the background pushes anyone in a nostalgic state. “Reunion” knew this, and capitalized on it. The producers found the perfect formula to use the songs of the band without making the movie a musical film.
The movie was fun, heartwarming, and “musical.”
