In an interview with Marge Enriquez of Inquirer, Eric Quizon recounts how his father, the King of comedy Dolphy, lost his battle to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in 2012. This is to create awareness about the deadly effect of COPD.

“It was emotional for us, knowing there was no cure for the disease. There was no timeline given. He said he would just slowly deteriorate,” Eric recounts. “It was difficult for us because we knew he would finally succumb to COPD.”

COPD is a lung ailment is caused by “smoking and charcoal cooking emit noxious substances that inflame the lungs and the airways,” according to Dr. Bernice Ong-dela Cruz.

In Dolphy’s case, he acquired COPD by consuming three packs of cigarette everyday until he turned 45, when he was diagnosed with emphysema.

Despite his condition, Dolphy remained active in the industry and has even filmed two more films titled “Nobody, Nobody but Juan (2009)” and “Father Jejemon (2011).”

“The doctors said his condition wouldn’t get better. He was Stage 3 then. When we announced his condition to the family, the COPD was Stage 4. Yet he managed to live for three more years,” shares Eric.

After his long battle with COPD, Dolphy, 83, died on July 10, 2012.
“My dad was a fighter,” Eric exclaims.
