If there's a group people who knows how it's like having an "other self", it's us millennials.
We tend to put up a better version of our lives online and the backlash of it, works like the domino effect.
Xian Lim, who plays as the adventurous Henry in the film "Dear Other Self" and a self-confessed millennial, talked about how the term "Y.O.L.O. (You Only Live Once)" seemed to have been encripted on our minds, giving us all this fantasy of a life with nothing but excitement.
“I can relate so much kay Henry. He’s the type na ‘yung mga millennials, katulad namin our mindset is talagang, they have the ‘there’s no tomorrow’ kind of mind. You kinda have to filter it din eh. Kasi marami din tayong nababasa, marami rin tayong nakikita sa net, na parang maybe maganda lang talaga siya sa mata and it makes you think na, ‘Sana ito na lang ‘yung buhay ko eh! Paano kaya kung ito?’ but at the same time hindi. You kinda have to filter it," Xian said.
Jodi Sta. Maria, also a star of "Dear Other Self", pointed out though that there are still millennials, including herself, that aren't fazed with everything they see.
“Hindi naman ako easily swayed by the things that I see on the net. When it comes to decision-making, siguro because I’m a mother already, I’m more careful with my decisions in life," Jodi shared.
Director Veronica Velasco later added that "Dear Other Self" will show what happens when this fantasy becomes a reality through the story of Jodi's character Becky.
"Hopefully, ‘pag napanood ‘to, they will be more guided. Kasi ‘pag nagbabasa ka sa internet, iba rin ‘yun eh, parang it sounds too good to be true. So sa pelikulang ‘to, makikita mo kung totoo ba, makikita mo ‘yung mangyayari, kasi everyone knows how it feels like to be a breadwinner sa pamilya sa Pilipinas. What about kung ni-let go mo lahat ‘yun, kung sinunod mo ‘yung gusto mo? Makikita mo ‘yun sa pelikula," said Direk Veronica.
She continued, "Sana ‘pag pumasok kayo ng teatro at nanood kayo, lumabas kayo na naintindihan ‘yung kwento, na meron kayong insight. Should I pursue my passion? Or time first muna, gagawin ko muna ‘yung kailangan kong gawin.”
Writer Jinky Laurel, however, said that even though this film stars millennials and made with millennials in mind, everyone else will still be able to relate to it and here's why:
“It’s really a story every one can relate to, kasi lahat naman nga tayo nagtanong ng what if. This is an opportunity, kasi siyempre ikaw, ‘di mo naman malalaman, ‘What if nag-doktor ako, pero instead nag-writer ako.’ ‘Di mo naman makikita kung anong nangyari kung nag-doktor ako eh. This is a very a relatable story that will give you an opportunity to see two paths in a person’s life, sa mga choices that you make," Jinky.
Also starring Joseph Marco, "Dear Other Self" is showing in cinemas this May 17.
