Here comes the final verdict: The ABS-CBN management, Star Cinema, and Angel Locsin have all agreed that she will no longer play the iconic superheroine Darna in the big screen due to her medical condition.
The award-winning actress faced the public through an interview on "TV Patrol" earlier, March 20, sad that she has to really let go of the highly-anticipated project that fans rallied behind her for for years now, but still hopeful of brighter things ahead.
"Sana maintindihan ng mga tao na hindi ko na magagawa ang 'Darna,'" she said. "Mahirap ho para sa'kin dahil napakaimportante para sa'kin ng proyekto, at nababasa ko 'yung mga comments ng tao, 'yung mga sumusuporta, 'yung mga nagdadasal na magawa ko pa 'yung role."
She continued, "Gustung-gusto ko pa sanang gawin talaga for them. Pero hindi na ho siguro talaga kaya. Kailangan na ho siguro talaga nating bitawan."
Angel, who appeared in the blockbuster films "Everything About Her" and "The Third Party" last year, assured her supporters that there's no need to worry.
"Okay naman ako, hindi naman ako baldado. Makakagawa pa naman ako ng action projects, hindi lang ho siguro 'yung same requirement as Darna," she noted.
Star Cinema has yet to announce who will fill in the big, coveted shoes that Angel has left for "Darna," but she sure has someone in her mind fit for it already.
"Meron silang mga pinipili, wala pang final, [pero] may mga bet ako," she revealed.
Angel first withdrew from the project, announced in 2014, back in 2015, due to the disc bulge in her spine. She underwent therapy and surgery in Singapore and resumed training soon after. However, her fitness coach Chappy Callanta observed one day that her spine wasn't in a good condition, and hence, he didn't give her the clearance to continue her training.
ABS-CBN Corporate Communications Division has also released a statement on the matter, commending Angel's "gargantuan" efforts to train after her surgery and her skills and passion that made her the first choice to play Darna in Star Cinema's adaptation to be directed by Erik Matti.
Keep soaring, Angel!
